The Whale Rider

This movie was incredible and beautiful, it was so refreshing to see a film about an indigenous culture that didn't make them look ridiculous (save for the warrior faces) or ignorant. The movie really captures the sufferings of a dying culture but is portrayed in a way that is inspiring in beautiful. The movie was so colorful by way of scenery and characters clothing which really represents the hope and serenity of the land and culture.
Although it was both heartbreaking and frustrating to see Kora repeatedly belittle his granddaughter because of her sex, it was invigorating to see Paikea go against all odds to do what she was destined to do and prove him wrong. They way the movie was filmed accentuates Paikea's love her culture and history which is so admirable. When scenes cut to shots of the whales floating effortlessly through the blue water, you could tell that they were almost speaking to her; it also emphasized the significance of the culture's origin story and what the whale represents.

(I really loved this movie and I'm totally going to watch it again with some friends/family.)
