You can't watch this movie without noticing how fun and intense the soundtrack is and although through our western hears it might not make much sense, it's lyrics carry meaning. I feel like they chose this soundtrack so portray some cultural aspects of South Africa and urban life there. It seems quite similar to some of the music we have here in the US which I find interesting. Very rarely does the mood of the music match the mood of the scene as far as the instrumental goes but in learning that the lyrics match the scene was is quite different from what we have here in the United States. In our films, it seems that there is hardly any use for lyrics to portray a scene and it is up to the instrumental to carry on the mood.
I really did enjoy the music from this movie even if it is in another language, it really put the viewer in the kind of environment Tsotsi grew up in and captured our understanding in a unique way. Curious about some of the lyrics to these songs, I went ahead and looked up the lyrics to the song Zingu 7.
To lead a better life I need my love to be here...
Here, making each day of the year
Changing my life with the wave of her hand
Nobody can deny that there's something there
There, running my hands through her hair
Both of us thinking how good it can be
Someone is speaking but she doesn't know he's there
I want her everywhere and if she's beside me
I know I need never care
But to love her is to need her everywhere
Knowing my love is to share
Each one believing that love never dies
Watching her eyes and hoping I'm always there
I need her everywhere and if she's beside me
I know I need never care
But to love her is to need her
(take 13)
Everywhere
Knowing my love is to share
Each one believing that love never dies
Watching her eyes and hoping I'm always there
And I will be there and everywhere
Wow, those lyrics are really interesting. Good job looking that up! Mimi
