There's something beautiful about The 400 Blows being filmed in black & white. And although it's a 1959 film - with no choice but to be in black and white, I feel the movie would not have been half as effective if it were in color. It's attention to facial expression being captured by close-up shots adds a very human feel to the film and a special type of understanding to the character without having any words being spoken. I also find the long shots the film uses when tracking a character to be humbling and really expresses the environment of the city.
I agree that the black and white, combined with the deep focus, makes this a visually beautiful film.
